What is Visa VAMP?

The Visa Acquirer Monitoring Program (VAMP) is Visa's system for tracking merchant chargeback rates. If your VAMP ratio exceeds 0.9%, you enter the Standard Program and pay $8 per dispute. At 1.8%, you enter the Excessive Program with higher penalties and risk processor termination.

Critical: Fraud chargebacks count double (×2) in your VAMP ratio, making fraud prevention essential for compliance.

The program officially launches October 1, 2025, replacing Visa's previous VDMP system with stricter thresholds and higher penalties.

<0.9%
Safe Zone
No penalties. Normal processing.
0.9-1.8%
Standard Program
$8 per dispute. Increased monitoring.
>1.8%
Excessive Program
$8 per dispute + termination risk.

Example Calculation:

100 chargebacks + 50 fraud chargebacks (counts ×2 = 100 weighted) = 200 total weighted disputes
On 10,000 transactions = 2.0% VAMP ratio
Result: Excessive Program = $1,200/month in penalties + processor termination risk

Frequently Asked Questions

When does Visa VAMP start?

Visa VAMP officially launches October 1, 2025, replacing the previous VDMP program. Merchants should start tracking their VAMP ratio now to ensure compliance by launch.

How is VAMP ratio calculated?

VAMP ratio = (Total Chargebacks + Fraud Chargebacks) ÷ Total Transactions × 100. Note that fraud chargebacks count twice—once in total chargebacks and once added separately.

What are the VAMP thresholds?

Standard Program: 0.9-1.8% VAMP ratio. Excessive Program: Above 1.8%. Below 0.9% is the safe zone with no penalties.

How much are VAMP penalties?

$8 per dispute once you exceed 0.9% VAMP ratio. This applies to both Standard and Excessive programs. For 100 disputes/month, that's $800 in penalties.

Why do fraud chargebacks count double?

Visa weights fraud chargebacks ×2 because they indicate higher risk. This means fraud prevention is critical for VAMP compliance—one fraud chargeback impacts your ratio as much as two regular chargebacks.

What happens if I exceed thresholds?

You'll enter a monitoring program with $8/dispute penalties. If you stay above thresholds for multiple months, your processor may terminate your account. Chronic violations can result in MATCH list placement (5-year ban).

How can I reduce my VAMP ratio quickly?

Implement RDR (Rapid Dispute Resolution), improve fraud detection, optimize billing descriptors, and enroll in Visa CDRN. Most merchants see 30-50% reduction within 60-90 days with proper prevention tactics.
